Cruciform

BUILDING

An all-seeing eye (Pan optis) watches over and has the power to redeem men from their disobedient acts, absolute power and control to save them from death.

The idea of founding a panopticon-type prison was thought not only to keep the prisoners well insured. It should, in turn, produce another result sought by the Colombian population of liberal as well as conservative orientation: that they stop thinking about the death penalty.

The old Ibagué prison is a building from the end of the 19th century. It was conceived under the concept of panopticism of the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham, according to which the functional architectural structure served to exercise surveillance and punishment from the control of the gaze exerted from a single point, whose sentinel could observe all sides.
